Weekend away

Two weeks ago, Cynthia and I went out of the city with Mike and Kylie.  They are in Zambia for a much shorter time than us and are always looking to get away.  We left the kids for a two night get away (don’t worry, we didn’t leave them alone).  We stayed at Gwabi Lodge on the Kafue river just before it empties into the Zambezi River.

Cynthia posted some of the bird photos on her blog but I just noticed that I hadn’t posted anything regarding our trip.  We are at the very end of the rainy season, so the water is high as well as the grass.  Everything is green, which is nice, but it isn’t an ideal time for wildlife.

In order to reach the area, you need to take a pontoon across the river.

A fellow guest took our photo from the deck overlooking the river.

The lodge had a nice pool and we spent the afternoons reading and occasionally jumping in to cool off.

The Zambezi river is large and separates Zambia and Zimbabwe and has a few islands.

We went on an afternoon boat ride and stopped on one island for refreshment.  The elephants seem to be used to people.

The banks of the river had colonies of bee-eaters, which are very colorful and later in the year, another crimson colored bee-eater will make use of the same holes.

I got some of my best photos yet of the African Fish Eagle.

We came across several elephants and I especially like the colors in this photo.

This one shows the mountains in the background.  It is a very beautiful area.

We enjoyed beautiful views of the river from the lodge.

Beautiful sunsets.

And some birds…
